We are all smokers now

A year or so ago I gave a speech at a fringe meeting at UKIP it was called:

We are all smokers now.

Apologies for the bullet form but I hope you get the idea.

Speech Introduction

F2C and TICAP the International Coalition Against Prohibition thank Freedom Association invite.

Hands smoking ban, drinking ban in pubs fatty food and crisp can in supermarkets

Coma last 50 years smoking is bad for you. 7 years mortality, 86% LC, 90% emphysema. Cigar smokers inhale, pipe smokers 2 years. Give up electronic cigs and Allen Carr books and clinics 50%. Nicotine patches £70 million success rate 0.8% Give < 30 normal mortality.

Smokers £15 billion economy direct taxation and 5p on income tax.

Most govt interference comes with unintended and usually worse consequences.  JD Rockefeller writing 1932 before prohibition was lifted. Anti drink and tee totallor

“When Prohibition was introduced, I hoped that it would be widely supported by public opinion and the day would soon come when the evil effects of alcohol would be recognized. I have slowly and reluctantly come to believe that this has not been the result. Instead, drinking has generally increased; the speakeasy has replaced the saloon; a vast army of lawbreakers has appeared; many of our best citizens have openly ignored Prohibition; respect for the law has been greatly lessened; and crime has increased to a level never seen before.”

Asked about drug use. |Yes, Cannabis, snorting cocaine. Nor crack, heroin until responsible pharmaceutical companies. 54% of all crime junkies.  20 yrs daily major, cancer, heart failure organ.

First they came for the drug users. 40 years afterAmerica$1 trillion on the war on drugs a”

After 40 years, the United States’ war on drugs has cost $1 trillion and hundreds of thousands of lives, and for what? Drug use is rampant and violence even more brutal and widespread.”

Portugal has decriminalised drugs, 2001 consumption has halved for cannabis, heroin, cocaine. HIV

The Cato Institute concludes: “The data shows that, judged by virtually every metric, the Portuguese decriminalization framework has been a resounding success.”

I am sure you are familiar with Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the inactivity of German intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group.

Blue print current

Then they came for smokers.

I find offensive govt has legislated for a legal substance but it is also has spawned a dis information industry.

Economic damage my paper published by the IEA 1980 2006 0.6504% 2007 2.775% 10,000 pubs or 1/6 have closed 100k

Reason banning passive smoking. That it causes lung cancer heart attacks. Lung cancer believe to be true after 40-50 years constant exposure 1.76 people per 100,000. 5 per 100,000 car. 3x likely to die as a pedestrian or as a car driver. Also 2x as brain tumour and 3x contract lung cancer drinking milk. Before ban smoking in pubs you need to ban the other 2.

On PS science you have misled Biblical scale

Sir George Godber in 1975 (“..foster an atmosphere where it was perceived that active smokers would injure those around them, especially their family and infants or young children who would be exposed involuntarily to the smoke in the air

Out of 80 studies 14% statistically significant 10% stat signi protection 76% support null hypothesis.

On heart attacks

This study examined a total of 217,023 heart attack deaths and 2.0 million heart attack admissions in 468 counties in all 50 states over an eight-year period

In contrast with smaller regional studies, we find that workplace bans are not associated with statistically significant short-term declines in mortality or hospital admissions for myocardial infarction or other diseases.”

2. “An analysis simulating smaller studies using subsamples reveals that large short-term increases in myocardial infarction incidence following a workplace ban are as common as the large decreases reported in the published literature.”

Then they came for the drinkers

Most Smoking bans WHO Framework \convention Tobacco Control 2005

Now have one for alcohol 2008. 11.2.11

Demonised, criminalised, discriminated against like smokers. ]

Like SHS with Junk science.

Action needed to reduce health impact of harmful alcohol use

Nearly 4% of all deaths are related to alcohol. Most alcohol-related deaths are caused  from injuries, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and liver cirrhosis. CARDIOVASCULAR PLATLET AGGREGATION.

Globally, 6.2% of all male deaths are related to alcohol, compared to 1.1% of female deaths. Globally, 320 000 young people aged 15-29 years die annually, from alcohol-related causes, resulting in 9% of all deaths in that age group.

These include taxation on alcohol to reduce harmful drinking; reducing availability through allowing fewer outlets to sell alcohol, raising age limits for those buying and using effective drink-driving measures.

The Global Strategy also promotes the screening and brief interventions in healthcare settings to change hazardous patterns of drinking, and treatment of alcohol use disorders; regulating or banning marketing of alcoholic beverages; and conducting information and educational campaigns in support of effective policy measures.

Harmful alcohol use is one of four common risk factors, along with tobacco use, poor diet and physical inactivity, for the four main groups of no communicable diseases (NCDs) – cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic lung diseases and diabetes.

The Royal College of Physicians said in 2008 “The ‘passive effects’ of alcohol misuse are catastrophic – rape, sexual assault, domestic and  other violence, drunk driving and street disorder – alcohol affects thousands more innocent victims than passive smoking.”

““Supermarkets are exhibiting the morality of a crack dealer” house Common Select Committee told Professor Martin Plant

14 units women and 21 units men

“Mr Smith, a former Editor of the British Medical Journal said “Those limits were really plucked out of the air. They were not based on any firm evidence at all. It was a sort of intelligent guess by a committee,”

“But a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that – for reasons that aren’t entirely clear – abstaining from alcohol does actually tend to increase one’s risk of dying even when you exclude former drinkers. The most shocking part? Abstainers’ mortality rates are higher than those of heavy drinkers.” 63 units over a bottle of wine a day tee tottaler

Met police 12,000 2000 4,000 2009 drunkeness

Its own figures, which are based on sales and not self-reporting, suggest alcohol sales peaked in 2004 and have fallen by 13% since then.

Then they came for the obese.

5 a day WHO sponsored

More than 400,000 people were involved in the respected EPIC trial from across Europe, including Britain and the results are published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute

August 15, 2010|By DENNIS GOTTFRIED, M.D.

Passive obesity

“”When people with whom we are closely associated gain weight, such as a spouse, sibling, neighbor or friend, we are also at an increased risk of gaining weight. For example, if your friend becomes obese, you have a 177 percent increased risk of becoming obese. If your friend’s brother becomes obese, your risk is still increased. The increased risk goes out to four degrees of separation.”

“Business offices and hospitals, for example, could designate “healthy snacks only” areas and discourage people from bringing unhealthy treats for employees.

Instead of coffee breaks, workers should be given “exercise breaks.” Health club memberships could be subsidized. It may take time, but we can hope that by using some of the measures we have learned from the ongoing battle against smoking, we can overcome the obesity epidemic and improve the health of all Americans.”

SF council banned  Happy meal toys.

The they came for the car drivers. Tim Yeo Chair of the Parliaments Environmental Committee car pollution causes 5x more deaths than PS of exhaust fumes.

“Air pollution probably causes more deaths than passive smoking, traffic accidents or obesity, yet it receives very little attention from Government or from the media.”

World Action on Salt and Health whose mission statement is was established in 2005 and is a global group with the mission to improve the health of populations throughout the world by achieving a gradual reduction in salt intake.

Even going to demonise people who put salt on their food.

Gambling Commission 75% of us have a flutter, lottery, grand national 0.8% report 2 years ago no problem,

Mature adults when not infantilised by the state run their affairs far better than the state.

In conclusion smoking was the blue print, the dry run for government and the health lobby to denormalise, nanny and bully the population using junk science, manipulated statistics, populist slogans and billions of taxpayer’s money.

Liberty a la carte menu pick and choose it is a smorgesboard where every has their rights respected. If not unelected busy bodies and underemployed politicians will abuse them.

What I have hoped I have demonstrated is that from Mr and Mrs Jones to Mr and Mrs Armstrong-Jones you will be next to feel the stigma of the state.

Thank you for your time and indulgence.

1 Response to We are all smokers now

  1. Pat Nurse says:

I gave a speech in 2009 at my first UKIP conference and I had no idea how it would be received. I expected rotten tomatoes to be thrown at me but I got a resounding standing ovation and applause with support from all but a couple of people in the room. Choice then became UKIP policy on this issue.

When I stood on the issue in the 2010 GE, I found even rabid anti-smoker nutter UKIP voters felt that in the scheme of things, it was an issue of irrelevance and as long as they could still have non smoking places to socialise they didn’t give a damn if an element of choice was brought back for smokers.

The only people I have found in support of the current legislation, by asking many who hate smoking in other walks of life, are self interest groups like ASH, Big Corporate firms like Big Pharma, and stupid Govt ministers who have no idea of how the public really feels about this issue.
