JD Rockefeller’s letter on Prohibition

John D. Rockefeller Jr the wealthy industrialist, was a tee totaller who agreed with American Prohibition of alcohol. It lasted from 1919 to 1933 and was a complete disaster. Drinking increased and organised crime blossomed, in 1932 he wrote a letter confirming the abject failure.  It looks like the Conservative government will be condemned to not learn from history.

“When Prohibition was introduced, I hoped that it would be widely supported by public opinion and the day would soon come when the evil effects of alcohol would be recognized. I have slowly and reluctantly come to believe that this has not been the result. Instead, drinking has generally increased; the speakeasy has replaced the saloon; a vast army of lawbreakers has appeared; many of our best citizens have openly ignored Prohibition; respect for the law has been greatly lessened; and crime has increased to a level never seen before.”

The dastardly, long-term influence of J.D. Rockefeller cannot be overstated.

VERY BRIEFLY (off the top of my head), in the early-1900s, Rockefeller, and many others of the “mega-wealthy” class (e.g., Ford, Carnegie), was a supporter/funder of eugenics. In addition to its racial dimension, eugenics was very much anti-alcohol/tobacco. The Temperance Movement (religious leanings) had very limited success with the legislature concerning anti-alcohol/tobacco. But as soon as the eugenicists (physicians, biologists, zoologists, statisticians) came on the scene, things started to happen legislatively. The eugenicists were viewed as scholarly and scientific – which they were not – and were endorsed by the mega-wealthy, the wealthy and the “educated” classes.

Rockefeller (and Ford) had very close dealings with the Nazis. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil had business treaties with IG Farben which was the financer of the Nazis. Without IG Farben, which would follow in after invasions and take over industry, the Nazis would have gotten nowhere.

During the early-1900s, Rockefeller also promoted/funded the rise of allopathic medicine (cut, burn, poison) to the detriment of naturopathic medicine. Allopathy is the current medical establishment that had its move to domination thanks to Rockefeller early last century. Rockefeller’s interest in allopathy was pharmaceuticals (an extension of petro-chemical which he already had a monopoly over) which can be patented: Natural remedies could not be patented. He also created the Cancer Society (which went by another name originally?), the Heart Foundation, and the Lung Association. These were groups that would protect emerging allopathic medicine from naturopathic criticism. These groups are essentially part of the allopathic medical establishment, protecting its ideological/financial interests, but giving the impression that they are “external”, independent groups. He exploited this idea of “philanthropy”. These “philanthropic” groups can be used to manipulate government policy and culture while giving the impression of independence and “charity”, and they eventually become self-funding through donations. There were a number of “cancer societies” early last century that were making the claim that a “cure” was “just around the corner” if only more money was donated. We hear the same chants today. There have been many billions of dollars that have passed through cancer societies over the last half century, but still no cure.

Although JD’s public view on Prohibition is noted, the Rockefeller lineage didn’t stop the social engineering intent. JD Rockefeller died in 1937. Post-WWII, the Rockefeller Foundation was most enthusiastic for the formation of the UN: It donated land in New York for the UN building. The Foundation also continued with anti-tobacco. George Godber was a Rockefeller scholar; Austin Bradford Hill was a Rockefeller scholar; Richard Doll was a Rockefeller scholar(?). Rockefeller provided funding for the London School of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene. These “old-money” Foundations (e.g. Rockefeller, Ford, Carnegie) will also have provided funding for antismoking in the current crusade. You’ll notice that “new money” mega-wealth follows the established [century-long] order. Gates and Bloomberg have pumped hundreds of millions of dollars into anti-tobacco. Hundreds of millions of dollars have gone into third-world countries. While these countries have problems of starvation and water-borne diseases due to a lack of clean drinking water, obscene amounts of money are going towards anti-tobacco.

A well-buried, little-known fact is that in late-1933/early-1934, just after the fascists were installed to power in Germany, there was an attempted coup in the USA intending to install a fascist government. This is known as the “Business Plot”. A congressional investigation concluded that there was an attempted, but failed, coup. The wrong man was picked to lead the coup, who then turned whistleblower. No prosecutions followed (possibly deals). The attempted coup involved a “who’s who” of the mega-wealthy in the USA, many of them the same supporters/funders of eugenics.

    An interesting aside:

It’s not surprising that California lead the “antismoking way” post-WWII, now looking into “thirdhand smoke danger”. It is a continuation of its strong eugenics heritage. California performed, by far, more sterilizations than any other state in the first half of the last century.

However, the California elites still have a strong eugenics proclivity. The emphasis has been shifted from physical sterilization to social sterilization along the behavioral dimension of eugenics, e.g., antismoking.

    Crumbs, where to begin?

    Tobacco

Well strangely enough it appears to start with James 1st of England, writer of a called Daemonology, authorised the King James Version, King James Bible because the Puritans had apparently found fault with the previous one, and declared tobacco, not only an ungodly Heathen practice, but helpfully stated that the sins committed by those who used it were “sinnefull and shamefull lust” and “a branche of the sinne of drunkennesse, which is the roote of all sinnes”
Which probably carried a lot of weight in certain quarters, he being the head of the Church of England.

Promptly putting the tax up to the “Somme of Six Shillinges and eighte Pence uppon everye Pound Waight thereof, over and above the Custome of Twoo Pence uppon the Pounde Waighte usuallye paide heretofore;” to price the poor out of the market –

    – And a very religious family who got fabulously rich and set out to put a stop to all this dreadful sinning, improve the populace, while making a fortune at the same time.

    Eugenics

Eugenics and the Nazis — the California connection

“Eugenics would have been so much bizarre parlor talk had it not been for extensive financing by corporate philanthropies, specifically the Carnegie Institution, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Harriman railroad fortune.

They were all in league with some of America’s most respected scientists from such prestigious universities as Stanford, Yale, Harvard and Princeton. These academicians espoused race theory and race science, and then faked and twisted data to serve eugenics’ racist aims”

“More than just providing the scientific roadmap, America funded Germany’s eugenic institutions.
By 1926, Rockefeller had donated some $410,000 — almost $4 million in today’s money — to hundreds of German researchers. In May 1926, Rockefeller awarded $250,000 toward creation of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Psychiatry. Among the leading psychiatrists at the German Psychiatric Institute was Ernst Rüdin, who became director and eventually an architect of Hitler’s systematic medical repression.

Another in the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute’s complex of eugenics institutions was the Institute for Brain Research. Since 1915, it had operated out of a single room. Everything changed when Rockefeller money arrived in 1929.”

    Eugenics in America

“The writings of Darwin, Galton, and their contemporaries in England inevitably wound their way across the pond, arriving at a particularly tenuous time in U.S. history. A confluence of conditions in the five decades following the American Civil War deepened the divide between the business-owning and -managing class and the working class.”

Galton’s writings on eugenics were readily adopted and disseminated by a number of Americans in the late 1800s, but the movement would truly begin to gather steam with the founding of the Station for Experimental Evolution in 1904 and the Eugenic Record Office (ERO) in 1910.[8] Both of these entities were directed by Harvard-trained zoologist and ardent eugenicist Charles Davenport and generously funded by the Carnegie steel and Harriman railroad fortunes. The nascent movement for racial hygiene in America now had a platform and a deep pocketbook from which to roll out its grand plan for the cleansing of humanity.

Work began in earnest to identify those lurking among the citizenry who were genetically “unfit” — those who suffered from, who appeared predisposed to, or whose family histories revealed such undesirable (and purportedly hereditary) traits as “feeble-mindedness” (whose definition was never standardized), “pauperism,” prostitution, low intelligence, epilepsy, mental illness, “criminality,” and even blindness.[9] The methods used by the ERO staff in their fact-finding missions were hardly scientific or consistent. Often they relied on cursory interviews, visual examinations, quizzes based largely on the knowledge of popular culture (the “IQ test” was a eugenic innovation), and hearsay from relatives, law enforcement officials, and employees of institutions where the feeble-minded or mentally suspect were confined. Those unlucky enough to be so incarcerated were often surgically sterilized to prevent the transmission of their “defective germ-plasm.”

“It should not escape our notice that the body of eugenics knowledge, however corrupt in its conclusions and methodology, was regarded by leading academics and policymakers as legitimate and state-of-the-art science, and it was promulgated as such by what were then, and are now, prominent scientific and medical journals and educational institutions. The journals of the American Medical Association and the American Public Health Association ran numerous features relaying, without quotation marks to infer editorial distance, the latest eugenics research papers and conference proceedings.”

    Where Eugenics meets Tobacco

A STUDY OF THE HEREDITY OF PELLAGRA IN SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA
Vol. XVIII No. 1, JULY 1916

“Early in the spring of 1913 the desirability of the study of pellagra from the viewpoint of heredity as a causative factor was brought to the attention of the Thompson-McFadden Pellagra Commission by Dr. Charles B. Davenport, Eugenics Record Office, Cold Spring Harbor, N. Y.

Under the joint patronage of the two offices fieldwork was begun in Spartanburg, June 1, 1913, and continued until Oct. 1, 1913. Through the winter the data collected were carefully reviewed, arranged in family groups and charted. It was found that in many instances more details were necessary, and the Thompson Pellagra Commission in 1914 decided that the results obtained were of sufficient merit to warrant another summer’s work.

Accordingly, fieldwork was begun May 1, 1914, and continued until Sept. 1, 1914.
This year the association of pellagrins with antecedent cases was also carefully noted for comparison”
    http://archinte.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/summary/XVIII/1/32

But Pellagra was eventually found to be a deficiency disease, coincidentally, the missing ingredient was found in a study funded by Rockefeller, worse still the vitamin had first been made by the oxidization of nicotine and previously named Nicotinic Acid, not knowing at the time that it had any benefits at all.

The immediate solution was to change the name while putting it in the bread to prevent further cases. It’s been causing confusion ever since.

    niacin

“pellagra-preventing vitamin in enriched bread,” 1942, coined from ni(cotinic) ac(id) + -in, chemical suffix; suggested by the American Medical Association as a more commercially viable name than nicotinic acid.
“The new name was found to be necessary because some anti-tobacco groups warned against enriched bread because it would foster the cigarette habit.” [“Cooperative Consumer,” Feb. 28, 1942]

Shortly after that Doll started his study.

“I shall have a Rockefeller Scholar in my department who might be used on it at little cost. A much better alternative would be Richard Doll who has been employed by the Council in the survey of peptic ulcer (sic) in industry and which is coming to an end I believe”

“The Rockefeller Foundation was first set up in 1904, and called the General Education Fund. An organization called the Rockefeller Foundation, ostensibly to supplement the Fund, was formed in 1910 and an effort was made to get a charter from Congress.”

“For three years the Rockefeller lobbyists besieged our national legislature for a charter and official respectability. Congress turned them down year after year on the ground that they would give no sanction to an organization with $100,000,000 to spend for commercial propaganda”

But not only were they influential in Germany, they had also set up in England.

“1919-1920 Preliminary moves by Rockefeller Foundation to explore possibilities for a School of Public Health in London ”

“The new School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine was opened in its present building in Keppel Street, a gift from the Rockefeller Foundation. At that time, the term ‘hygiene’ was not restricted to its current meaning of ‘cleanliness’ or ‘sanitary science’, but was used in the wider sense of the establishment and maintenance of health – now more usually described as ‘public health'”

“In 1921 the Athlone Committee recommended the creation of an institute of state medicine in London, this built on a proposal by the Rockefeller Foundation to develop a London based agency that would lead the world in the promotion of public health and tropical medicine. The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine was founded by Royal Charter in 1924.

The purchase of the site and the cost of a new building was made possible through a generous gift of $2m from the Rockefeller Foundation”

    BLAMING THE VICTIM: NEW PROMINENCE
    FOR AN OLD IDEOLOGY

“Disenchantment with medicine’s technical effectiveness, or rather its ineffectiveness and its dangers, reinforced the attack on medical technology that began with medicine’s fiscal problems.

Doubts about all this emphasis on medical technology spread from a small coterie of academic critics in the 1950s to the highest policy circles of government and foundations in the 1970s.”

“Technological medicine is becoming prohibitively expensive, but victim blaming is cost-effective.
“The cost of sloth, gluttony, alcoholic intemperance, reckless driving, sexual frenzy, and smoking have now become a national, not an individual, responsibility, all justified as individual freedom,” asserts Dr. John Knowles, the influential president of the Rockefeller Foundation.

“But one man’s or woman’s freedom in health is now another man’s shackle in taxes and insurance premiums.” Knowles sternly warns that “the cost of individual irresponsibility in health has become prohibitive”

This may be of interest here.

Lansley: Of course the culture is about moving to a place where tobacco and smoking isn’t part of normal life. People don’t encounter it normally, they don’t see it in supermarkets, they don’t see people smoking in public places, they don’t see tobacco vending machines.

We do want to arrive at place where we no longer see smoking as a normal part of life. We’re doing it by stages…….We need to stop that, and reduce that.

We’ve seen this we before spouting the same sentiments. Look at Godber’s address from 1975:

“but why should WE accord them [smokers] any right”
“I imagine that most of us here know full well that our target must be, in the long-term, the elimination of cigarette smoking…… We may not have eliminated cigarette smoking completely by the end of this century, but we ought to have reached a position where a relatively few addicts still use cigarettes, but only in private at most in the company of consenting adults.”.

The critical question is who are these ”we”? This “we” speak as if they own the world and everything in it, that they are highly knowledgeable, and that all must be made to abide by their proclamations. This “we” made antismoking a societal ideal. Who gave them this authority? They have no such authority. This is the typical language of zealotry or fanaticism. What allows them to speak this way is mental disorders such as megalomania and a “god complex”. They erroneously believe that they have a definitive, incontrovertible world view that all must abide by. And the “god complex” is probably most rife in the medical profession, and probably more so now than ever.

Godber was not an identified eugenicist. However, his medical background relying on physicalism/materialism, his derogatory definition of smoke/smoking/smokers, and his sense of entitlement to socially engineer an eradication of smoking from society is the classical eugenics view/mentality. There was nothing peculiar about Godber. He had a typical physicalist, authoritarian view of smoking. Authoritarian physicalism is eugenics whether it’s called eugenics or not. It’s best termed eugenics to quickly understand the danger the mentality and framework poses.

Just look at what is used to push antismoking (and now a litany of other “targets”). It’s population-level statistics. These people think in population terms, just like their eugenics predecessors who developed this use of statistics. They think of humans as a “herd” like cattle. The idea of the individual, let alone individual autonomy, does not enter their reasoning. It is a nonsensical idea to them; freedom is a nonsensical idea to them. It is a collectivist philosophy with the dangers that entails. But it is a peculiar collectivist philosophy where physical health and [the severe over-interpretation of poor] statistical markers of physical health is primary and where the medical establishment is the primary disseminator of “knowledge” and prescriptions/proscriptions. Individuals are not permitted to disagree: They either conform or suffer penalty. We should be able to clearly see the transformation in one-time relatively free societies such as the English-speaking West. The individual is free no longer. He must toe the medical/Public Health line. The medical establishment is intimately entrenched in the government health bureaucracy. Government and the medical establishment are no longer servants of the people; people are redefined as servants of the State. This is occurring with barely a whimper of protest. A failure of vigilance is very costly.

In interviews, anyone from the antismoking crowd should be asked emphatically “who do you think you are”? If I remember correctly from the Ken Burns documentary “Prohibition”, a question that was asked of fanatics that still spouted the anti-alcohol message following the repeal of Prohibition was “who do you think you are”? It was meant in the derogatory sense of “you’re not god, stop trying to play god, and shut up”. Unfortunately, we’re not at that stage of recognition yet. Many still believe that these zealots hold some higher moral ground. It’s all fakery. They represent no-one but their own deranged thinking and ambitions.

Merry Xmas From Uncle Sam Poison Rum, December 1926

“BY NOW, it was not only liberal Eastern wets like New York Gov. Al Smith who were calling for modification of the Volstead Act. A growing number of Republican leaders were abandoning the dry chorus: Nicholas Murray Butler, the distinguished president of Columbia University, had denounced Prohibition as evil and inhuman; even the saintly John D. Rockefellers, senior and junior, solid Baptist teetotalers both, had withdrawn funding from the Anti-Saloon League fanatics.

In referenda in New York and four other states, voters had overwhelmingly called for relaxation of the pious laws that the farm belt had successfully imposed upon all America seven long parched years earlier. In early December 1926, New York’s federal grand jury went on record as opposed to the national prohibition laws, arguing, among other things, that they had all by themselves created “a ruthless and dangerous set of criminals.”

And still the federal sleuths mounted large prosecutions; still the Dry Navy prowled the coast for rum runners; a week before Christmas, President Calvin Coolidge went before Congress to request still another $30 million for enforcement. For all the diligence, there were said to be 22,000 thriving speakeasies in the city – this number came from an assistant U.S. attorney who had quit his job in hopeless despair – and it was estimated that a good 100,000 cases of whisky continued to arrive every week.

This, of course, translated into somewhere between four and 14 times that volume on the street, depending on what degree the fresh deliveries had been cut by local bootleggers and then rebottled. Only the very well-to-do were privileged to enjoy the uncut stuff. The average 75-cent glass of speakeasy liquor was not quite the real thing. In lesser dives, most of a 25-cent shot was denatured industrial alcohol – government-regulated wood alcohol, full of pyridine and diethylpthalate. Or, to put it another way, poison.

The official Health Department numbers made it plain that more and more people were dying of bad alcohol in New York City every year, not even counting the off-the-books deaths: 127 in 1921, 233 in 1922, 370 in 1923, 499 in 1924, 585 in 1925. The city’s 1926 death toll was expected to surpass 750. Nationally, the number was nearly 4,000. Every Christmas, the Anti-Saloon League’s general counsel, the odious Wayne Wheeler, made a public point of expressing satisfaction at these figures. “If a man wishes to violate the Constitution of the United States,” Wheeler liked to chuckle, “he should be free to commit suicide in his own way.”

On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in the city, reported Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Charles Norris, 11 more merrymakers died, and 55 were committed blind and sick and raving to hospital wards.

BY WEDNESDAY the 29th, the death count had hit 37, and hundreds were hospitalized. These included not only the standard-issue Bowery bums, but several perfectly respectable businessmen, a policeman and two young St. Luke’s Hospital nurses who had gone to a party, had one drink each and were dead three hours later.

“Murder! Just plain unadultered murder!” shouted Butler. State Health Commissioner Dr. Matthias Nicoll agreed that the federal government bore full responsibility for killing its citizens. So did Norris. “The government knows that it is not stopping drinking by putting poison in its alcohol,” he said. “It knows what the bootleggers are doing with it, and yet it continues the poisoning process. The bootleggers with their improper distilling methods can never distill all this stuff from their alcohol.”

Replied District Prohibition Administrator Chester Mills: “It is the fault of the people if they drink the stuff bootleggers are selling.” Chimed in the reliable Wheeler: “Deliberate suicide would seem to be the proper verdict.” Amid a wave of national revulsion, Wheeler was nonetheless happy to announce that soon the Treasury Department would start doubling the toxic content of denatured alcohol, even adding kerosene to the lethal mix.

“Merry Xmas from Uncle Sam,” observed the Daily News.

ON FRIDAY the 31st, there were 43 dead, and it wasn’t even New Year’s Eve yet. By midnight, two more people were gone and another 28 were hospitalized. And it was only midnight.

UNCLE SAM, said The News, “is sound and fine at heart. But he is controlled, just now, by a gang of blackjackers cloaking themselves in the sacred names of law observance, civic and national duty, patriotism. The Washington administration knuckles under to these daughters and sons of witch hunters of olden days, because it fears them.

“You must make the Washington administration fear the liberal vote more,” The News exhorted its readers. “Do it again, and again. Rip the Uncle Borgia mask off the honest face of Uncle Sam.”

    LIQUOR: Gentlemanly Temperance
    1935

“In the two decades before Prohibition, those lifelong teetotalers John D. Rockefeller Jr. and his father gave the Anti-Saloon League their stanch moral support and $350,323.67. When he declared for Repeal in 1932, Mr. Rockefeller by no means meant that he was quitting his long war on liquor. Having despaired at last of temperance by statute, he set his agents searching the world for other methods of attack.”

“What the Council proposes to do is spend $100,000 or more per year in attempting to persuade U. S. citizens to drink like gentlemen, to acquire “an attitude of individual responsibility toward the use of liquor.”

However, being realistic, how could anyone expect to get away with trying to denormalise alcohol again so soon after, the whole world had heard about prohibition.

Smoking is no longer acceptable, says Lansley

“Banning displays of cigarettes and tobacco will help young people resist the pressure to start smoking and help the thousands of adults in England who are trying to quit.”

“Jean King, from Cancer Research UK, told the programme: “We want everything we can possibly do to make cigarettes unavailable and inaccessible.”

This influenced the US Immigration laws of 1924 that outlawed Jewish immigration and which lasted even as Hitler (who had Henry Ford’s books in his library) was doing his worst:

  10. Thank you Magnetic. The internet is the tool that will destroy them not make them and you exposed them for WHO they are. Its why they are out to silence and control the speech on the net,OWEbama being the leader in internet control under the justification of national security.

Magnetic I for one read your posts with great passion!

I do enjoy Morris Bealle’s writing style, you can tell he was a newspaper man

The amount of companies he lists as being in the Rockefeller stable are amazing, some of them still household names.

“At this juncture American IG Farben decided to camouflage its German parentage and sympathies, with the help of Standard Oil. It changed its name to the General Aniline & Film Corporation shortly before the Pearl Harbor attack. Before doing this, American IG purchased an undisclosed number of shares in the Ozalid Corporation, Schering & Company, Mission Corporation, Monsanto Chemical, Aluminum Corporation, Drug (Incorporated), Dow Chemical, Antidolar Company, Standard Oil of New Jersey, Standard Oil of Indiana, Standard Oil of California and the duPont Company. It took over bodily the privately-owned Hoffman-LaRoche Company.

Meanwhile, Sterling Drug gobbled up Winthrop Chemical, the Bayer Company, General Drug, Vegex (Inc.), Cook Laboratories, the Centaur Company and Alba Pharmaceutical Company.”

Sterling Drug, Inc., the main cog and largest holding company in the Rockefeller Drug Empire, and its 66 subsidiary companies, showed operating profits in 1948 of $20,-742,382, and physical assets of only $23,979,428. Its 3,890,-647 shares were being hawked on the exchange at $39 a share. This totals $151,735,233 of paper value, or seven and a half times the combine’s aggregate assets.

Merck & Company had an operating income of $10,-120,053, according to Moody’s, and physical assets of only $19,965,805. Its 2,200,000 shares of $1.00 par value common were quoted July 1, 1949, at $31.75, and its 190,000 shares of preferred at $106.50. Total $90,140,000.

McKesson & Robbins showed an operating profit of $16,807,476 on physical assets of only $6,628,342. Its 1,-832,426 shares were quoted at $33.50 — $61,386,237.

Charles Pfizer & Co., Inc., is a drug trust unit which makes “fine organic chemicals” for other units to process into various items. Its statement shows a 1948 profit, of $16,917,118 and physical assets of only $15,421,633. Its profit was 109% of its actual investment, which has been parlayed into 50,000 shares of 3½ % $100 par value preferred, and 1,480,050 shares of common. The latter was quoted on the New York Stock Exchange July 1, 1949, at $45.50 a share. This gives the company’s inflation, value as $72,342,275, or 475 % of its investment value.”

    The Food and Drug Bandits

“A new product called sulfathiazole tablets was concocted by Winthrop Drug Company, one of the 66 subsidiaries of German Farben-American Standard Oil’s drug cartel. Being made by this Rockefeller unit it was automatically under the protection of both the Food & Drug Administration and the American Medical Association.”

Four hundred thousand sulfathiazole tablets were unloaded on the market in December, 1940. These tablets were a mixture of the “germ destroying” sulfa drug and Luminal, the drug which puts people to sleep. Although the usual safe dosage of Luminal is one grain, some of the sulfathiazole tablets were found to contain five grains.

Many people who bought and took these Winthrops really did go to sleep. They never woke up. It was then discovered that, to be charitable, the Food & Drug Administration had been asleep at the switch. They had approved deadly tablets apparently without knowing what they contained. No one was ever punished, or even embarrassed, for these murders.”

    Medicine: Dangerous Drug
    Monday, Apr. 07, 1941

“The best drug to cure dread staphylococcus bloodstream infections is sulfathiazole, a sulfanilamide relative which came out last year.

Last December Winthrop Chemical Co., a reputable Manhattan firm, shipped out 410,000 sulfathiazole tablets throughout the U. S. Several days later a doctor complained that the pills made a patient dangerously drowsy. Company chemists discovered to their horror that they had been accidentally mixed with a powerful sleeping powder, phenobarbital (popularly known as luminal).* In large doses, phenobarbital, like other sedatives, may prove fatal.”

“The contaminated batch was clearly marked MP029. The company said nothing to the Federal Government or to the American Medical Association, but quietly wired every wholesaler who had received the drug to return it. By that time some of the contaminated sulfathiazole had already been sold. For three months doctors in the U. S. knew nothing of the company’s mistake.”

The 1941 sulfathiazole disaster and the birth of good manufacturing practices.

“Hundreds of deaths and injuries resulted. FDA’s investigation into Winthrop’s sulfathiazole production and the agency’s efforts to retrieve the Winthrop drug remaining on the market revealed numerous control deficiencies in the plant and serious irregularities in the firm’s attempt to recall the tainted tablets.”

What has always bothered me is the plant chemistry doesn’t fit the claims anti-tobacco makes for it.
After all, there’s plenty of other plants to compare it with and they don’t seem to give any trouble.

But I can hazard a guess where they first got the idea.

“the stinking Suffumigation whereof they yet use against that disease, making so one canker or venime to eate out another.”
    http://www.laits.utexas.edu/poltheory/james/blaste/blaste.html

Clearly not up on his nightshades, the funny thing is that he may not even have been describing the tobacco that we smoke today, though nobody seems to differentiate between one variety of tobacco and another.

“Whereas before 1616 the indifferent plant (Nicotiana rustica) of the English colonies offered little competition to the popular Spanish leaf (Nicotiana tabacum) which was grown in the West Indies, Mexico, and the north of South America, the English colonists, by taking the Spanish plant from Trinidad and planting it in Virginia, began to trade in earnest. Indeed, it was largely due to this fact that England kept its hold on North America. In 1616 the first successful shipload of the New Virginjan tobacco was sent across the Atlantic. ”

But N.Rustica , Mapacho, is said to have 20 times more nicotine, so smoking that might have made people look a little drunk.
Like comparing Lactuca Virosa to a common supermarket lettuce.

    METHOD BASED ON SOLANESOL DETERMINATION

“Many plants of the Solanaceae family, which includes the genus Nicotiana, of which the tobacco
plant is a member, contain solanesol; particularly those that contain trace amounts of nicotine.
These include the tomato, eggplant, potato, and pepper.

The potential interference due to these sources is negligible, cooking being the only likely potential source of interference. An interference of this type would bias results high, overestimating the contribution of ETS to RSP.

“Thirty years ago the Standard Oil Company became impressed with the methods of the big packing houses which used, processed and sold every part of the hog but the squeal.

Their sales research department went ‘way back to the 1860’s when “Old Bill” Rockefeller, the itinerant pappy of John D. (the first) and a patent medicine showman, used to palm off bottled raw petroleum on the yokels as a cure for cancer.

“Old Bill” was an upstate New York farmer until 1850. He moved to Cleveland then, entered the patent medicine racket and had himself listed as a “physician” in the city directory. In selling raw petroleum in a pretty bottle “Old Bill” did nothing new.

He merely took a page out of the book of other patent medicine fakirs who were then hawking their wares from the backs of wagons — covered and uncovered. When oil was discovered in northwest Pennsylvania (1850) the jackals of the oil trade found there was more gold in the jeans of the gullible yokels than there was in working for it in the oil fields.

They began to bottle the raw petroleum and palm it off under various names as a cure for everything under the sun. The popular maladies of the day were liver complaint, cholera morbus, consumption and bronchitis. Among the names given this raw petroleum were “Seneca Oil,” “Rock Oil” and “American Medicinal Oil.”

“Old Bill” opened up a new field for himself. He called his bottled petroleum “Nujol” (meaning new oil) and sold it to those who had cancer and those whom he could make fear they would have it.”

“When a German beer hall bum named Hitler began to plan his 1,000-year Reich, the powers-that-were in Germany didn’t actually know that American politicians were going to solve their acute employment crisis by forcing us into the second world war to again save England’s hide and Rockefeller’s oil. But they weren’t taking any chances.

Germany’s huge dye trust (or chemical cartel) known as the I. G. Farbenindustrie Aktiengesellschaft, enjoyed a monopoly on all chemical products manufactured in Germany. German IG made an alliance with American Standard Oil in order to control important patents. The general idea was that the two were to pool their processes. This was done — in a one-sided way.

With the help of Standard Oil the German behemoth prevented American chemists from learning how to make synthetic rubber until after the Japs took the Malayan Peninsula and its vast rubber plantations. This almost lost war for the United States.

So, in 1939, when it became apparent that Germany would soon be unpopular in the United States, Standard Oil helped Hitler’s Reich cover its American holdings in the drug and chemical field. The American IG was formed, by taking over the Sterling Products Company, the Grasseli Chemical Works (alias the General Aniline Works), the Agfa-Film Company, the Winthrop Chemical and the Magnesium Development companies.”

    CHEMICALS: Who Owns Aniline?
    Monday, July 28, 1941

“The $62,000,000 General Aniline & Film Co., whose Swiss owners want to sell it, was understood to have found a bidder last week. The would-be buyer was not named. When and if the sale is made, a medal—whether for bravery, ingenuity or at the very least dope-upsetting—will be in order for the buyer.

General Aniline is a desirable property. It is the second largest U.S. manufacturer of photographic equipment (after Eastman), and is tied for third place with American Cyanamid (after Allied Chemical and Du Pont) in the making of dye-stuffs.”

“But it was formed under the auspices of I. G. Farbenindustrie, the great German dye trust, and it has prospered with the help of Farben skills and patents. Two years ago General Aniline—until then known as American I. G. Chemical Corp. —reorganized, and has since denied or minimized any Nazi affiliations. But it cannot seem to convince the U.S. Government that its ownership is in trustworthy hands.”

“General Aniline had some distinguished American directors when the Germans set it up in ’27. But Walter Clark Teagle, chairman of Standard Oil of N.J. (with which the Farben used to share patents) resigned from the Aniline board last year, and Edgar M. Clark (a Standard Oil man) and Edsel Ford followed suit early this month”

    I finally found that reference.

    Public Health in the 1950’s:
The Watershed of Smoking and Lung Cancer. Page 7

“Social medicine had been the main ideology working for change in public health in the interwar and wartime years, becoming an international movement with an exchange of ideas and models, derived in part from Soviet social hygiene experiments after the Revolution.

It’s influence extended to the United States, Latin America, and European countries like Belgium, where Rene Sand took the chair of social medicine in 1945, a post established with funding from the US Rockefeller Foundation.
Rockefeller was also instrumental in the international promotion of social medicine in Latin America. In many countries the goals of social medicine were overtly linked to programmes of political reform. In Britain, the ideas of social medicine were taken up by academics in medicine and the social sciences and the ideas developed as part of the more general discussion of health planning after the war.”

“Social medicine also intersected directly with the smoking and lung cancer story, for it was the social medicine networks which initially took the smoking issue forward.
The tenets of social medicine in the 1940’s were close to the interests of the Socialist Medical Association, of which Richard Doll was a prominent member.”

“The Social Medicine Unit was one of those originally considered for the smoking and lung research. Dr Horace Joules, medical superintendant of of the Hospital, was a member of the Socialist Medical Association; the hospital became a powerhouse of social medicine sentiment.”

Sir George Godber; “Horace Joules and the Hope of Prevention”
    27th January, 1978

“Sir George quoted Joules’ letter to the Lancet in 1953 which Ball had also referred to. In it he had criticised the Chief Medical Officer of Health’s report which referred to the “mysterious and inexorable rise of lung cancer” after Doll and Hill’s paper.
Joules had outlined the need for action then, and Sir George did not feel the action taken 25 years later was adequate. The WHO, for example, had made no move till 1970.

Sir George deplored the situation where it was illegal to advertise a cancer cure but legal to advertise smoking, a carcinogen.
He felt smoking should be seen as an infestation of the home, to be wiped out like head lice.”

Mr Bealle didn’t think much of Social Medicine and the NHS.

“A report from England gave the Drug Trust much joy. Since Britain’s Socialist government had socialized medicine, and made pills and drug concoctions “free,” the British people had tripled and quadrupled their consumption of these unnatural products. Pill swillers — the British people are being called. When you quadruple the 10 billion dollar annual drug bill of the American people you get the figure $40,000,000,000. Take 90% of that and you get $36,000,-000,000 profits.”
